
Pharmaceutical residues in water: a growing environmental problem

You may not think about it every day, but every time we use medicines, some of them end up in the sewage system via urine and feces. Although sewage treatment plants remove many substances, some drug residues remain and end up in surface water, a source of drinking water.
The magnitude of the problem
According to the RIVM, at least 190,000 kilos of pharmaceutical residues end up in Dutch surface water every year. This is almost eleven times as much as the amount of crop protection products that end up in the water.
Environmental impact
These drug residues can be harmful to aquatic organisms. For example, painkillers can damage the tissue of fish and contraceptives can cause gender changes.

Increasing challenge
Due to the aging population and further medicalization of society, the use of medicines is increasing. In addition, climate change is causing longer periods of drought, which can increase the concentration of these substances in surface water.
