PFAS in drinking water: what you need to know
Share
PFAS, also known as 'forever chemicals', are chemical substances that are difficult to break down and remain in the environment. They are used in various products and can end up in drinking water.
Risks of PFAS
Long-term exposure to PFAS can cause health problems, such as liver damage and an increased risk of certain types of cancer.
How do PFAS enter the water?
PFAS enter surface water via industrial discharges and household waste. Traditional water treatment plants cannot completely remove these substances.

New guidelines
In 2022, the Dutch government established a drinking water guideline value for PFAS of 4.4 ng/L, expressed as PFOA equivalents.
